Ranked Matchmaking in Halo Infinite Has Been Changed

Changes and upgrades to Halo Infinite multiplayer are on the way. The team has been “studying” both player ranks and ranked matchmaking since launch, according to 343 Industries community manager John Junyszek, and this work is about to pay off with a set of new upgrades that will begin rolling out next week.

Issues like rank inflation, erroneous skill assessment, and uneven player skills will be addressed, according to Junyszek, who also highlights the content of these improvements.

“First and foremost, since launch, our skill rating system has been analysing real matches, and we’re ready to implement some of the learnings from this live data,” Junyszek said of the upcoming adjustments. “These discoveries will aid the system in improving its ability to judge a player’s skill and will allow us to place them more precisely in our skill distributions. This will be the first backend skill upgrade since the game’s launch, and we want to conduct them on a regular basis going forward.

We’ll continue to monitor matches and push out updates on a regular basis, as we have in the past, to ensure that the algorithm is up to speed with the most recent player behaviours, allowing us to appropriately estimate player skill.”

In addition to improving skill ratings, 343 Industries is resetting Competitive Talent Ranking ranks, according to Junyszek, so that everyone can earn an updated CSR “that is more indicative of their skill.” The adjustments were prompted by the realisation that the old approach was “overly generous.”

“We’ve seen that the CSR system has been extremely generous since launch, so these improvements are being implemented to assist bring things closer to where they should be,” Junyszek explained. “A full tier inflation of ranks occurred during this period, and most players should anticipate to be put a full tier lower as a result” (Diamond players will find themselves in Platinum, Platinum players will find themselves in Gold, etc.) after this position.

Players should anticipate to be placed one tier lower after the update, according to Junyszek, because the old system placed them too high. Players will be placed lower in future placement matches.

All of these changes, as well as the rank reset, are planned to go live on Tuesday, February 22nd in the afternoon. As previously said, this is simply the first in a series of upgrades aimed towards improving ranked matchmaking in Halo Infinite.
