There have been a lot of changes in the rules of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction right from the 2025 mega auction. One of that rule is that the franchises can retain any uncapped player for just INR 4 crore.
An old rule is back which states that the franchises can retain a player who has retired from international cricket for over five years, as an uncapped player. Right from the release of the rules, there have been heavy discussions as fans feel that the particular rule is made so that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) can retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for INR 4 crore.
Veteran India spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, has stated that CSK should retain Dhoni as a normal player and not as an uncapped player. He wants CSK to retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana and Dhoni as the five players.
Dhoni stepped down from CSK captaincy right ahead of the start of the IPL 2024 after which Gaikwad became the captain. CSK did not qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2024 and will need to start off fresh in the mega auction in IPL 2025.
Ravichandran Ashwin reveals the reasons behind the retentions of CSK
Ashwin feels that Pathirana will be the point of difference with the ball and the batting is settled as well with Gaikwad at the top of the order. The 38-year-old thinks Dube and Jadeja will provide the all-round abilities.
Ashwin also thinks that with Pathirana and Jadeja in the lineup, CSK will always have bowlers who can bowl eight overs every game. Ashwin feels that if CSK do retain Rizvi, then they will invest in the future given that he batted brilliantly well in the UP T20 league.
