Real Madrid suffered their first defeat in 36 games as the defending UCL champions were beaten 1-0 by Ligue 1 side Lille. Despite fielding the likes of Vinicius Jr., Endrick and Jude Bellingham, the Los Blancos were unable to find the net throughout the game. In fact, hosts Lille enjoyed the larger share of chances and attempts on goal as the final score reflected the course of the game.

Madrid were so far out of their element that they resorted to technical fouls and last-minute tackles throughout the game. Lille’s dominance of the game finally reflected on the scoreline when a powerful free-kick from Edon Zhegrova was blocked on its way to goal by Eduardo Camavinga. Replays showed that the Frenchman’s hand was in an unnatural position, forcing the referee to award a penalty kick for the hosts.

With four goals in his last two games, penalty kick taker Jonathan David comfortably found the target as he sent Andriy Lunin the wrong way. Lille rode out the second half on the solitary goal and celebrated emphatically at full-time.

Fans react as Real Madrid end 36-game unbeaten streak with frustrating loss to Lille

Carlo Ancelotti couldn’t salvage a point against Lille even after subbing on Kylian Mbappe, Luka Modric and Arda Guler. A fan commented that Real Madrid are so used to being awarded penalties that the game they lost was the first game they conceded one. A viral clip on social media shows Mbappe’s brother, Ethan Mbappe hyping up the dressing room after the emphatic victory.

A fan stated that Mbappe’s younger brother showed him levels and that the latter will not forget the win for a long time. As Real Madrid‘s 14-game unbeaten run in the UCL also came to an end, a fan joked that Madrid can only go so far without the help of the referee. Many also criticized Endrick and Vinicius for being wasteful in front of goal and not making the best of the chances their teammates created.

Jude Bellingham, Endrick and Antonio Rudiger were shown yellow cards for making tactical fouls on their opponents. As things stand, Madrid have fallen down to 17th position after failing to win their second game in the competition. The club are winless in their last two games and will play Borussia Dortmund in a re-match of the UCL final later this month.
