Real Madrid had a brilliant chance to close the gap between them and FC Barcelona after the latter dropped points for the first time this season in La Liga. However, tasked with the difficult job of beating Atletico Madrid at Civitas Metropolitano, Carlo Ancelotti‘s side failed to come home with all three points. A late equalizer from Angel Correa meant that Real had to settle for a point on the night.

As things stand, the Los Blancos are still 3 points behind rivals Barcelona, who have 21 points from 8 games played. As for the game itself, Real have defender Eder Militao to thank for the goal. The Brazilian finished off a smart free-kick, thundering in a volley from inside the penalty area. Atletico also had their fair share of changes, with Thibaut Courtois doing well to keep out shots from Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann.

Courtois did well to tip the Frenchman’s stingy free-kick over the crossbar in injury time. However, Real hearts were meant to broken on Sunday, when Correa salvaged a point for Diego Simeone‘s side.

With just two minutes to go, the Argentine got on the end of a through ball before slotting home. To make things more interesting, Marcos Llorente was sent off for a foul on Fran Garcia.

Despite the disruptions and aggressive home crowd, the Madrid derby did not fail to deliver. As either side shared a point on the night, a fan commented that Real wouldn’t be feeling good after Atletico Madrid dealt them a dose of ‘their own medicine’. Another claimed that Vinicius Jr. should come nowhere near the Ballon d’Or podium after a performance like that.

Many Atletico fans claimed that Madrid is red and that it has been for a long time. Surprisingly, the defending champions of Europe have only managed to win one of their last seven games at the Civitas Metropolitano. Some couldn’t even comprehend how Real were having problems with Atletico despite bringing in the best players from around the globe. A fan even said that Real couldn’t ‘buy’ the officials this time around.

Adding to the disappointment of the draw was the fact that Ancelotti confirmed a muscle injury for Courtois ahead of their Champions League tie against LOSC Lille. Despite the unfavorable result, Ancelotti’s Real Madrid side became the first team in La Liga history to go 40 straight games unbeaten. They play their next La Liga game against Villarreal at home.
