Reports state that Alexander Zverev might lose out on Adidas sponsorship after heavy public outrage
World No. 7 Alexander Zverev is having a very split year overall. While his on-court performances have been top-notch, off-court incidents have troubled the young German. One of his best seasons on the court is being mirrored against a lot of negative press off the court.
Recently, Brenda Patea, an ex-girlfriend of the star, announced that she was pregnant and didn’t want to share custody of the child with him, implying sour relations. Then, Olya Sharypova, another ex-girlfriend, leveled serious allegations of domestic abuse against Zverev. While he has publicly denied these allegations, he is still facing a massive backlash on social media because of these two incidents.
His Adidas sponsorship renewal may be in danger
Now, reports claim that this backlash may have an adverse effect on Zverev’s sponsorships too, including one with Adidas.
According to Ben Rothenburg, a prominent tennis reporter, the apparel sponsorship deal between Adidas and the player ends in December. Renewal may be dicey because of the market’s reluctance to deal with a player carrying such allegations against him.
Another setback for the German tennis star came through Instagram. The Rolex Paris Masters Instagram account recently posted some content related to Zverev. An onslaught of comments against Zverev ensued, including the hashtag #IStandWithOlya (referring to his ex-girlfriend).
Where Alexander Zverev’s troubles began
Everything was normal for Alexander Zverev until his fortunes were shifted when Brenda Patea announced her pregnancy. She vehemently refused any chance of her sharing custody of the child with him. Zverev, in a statement, said that he was “looking forward to the child”, and would give his full support to its upbringing.
In the statement, Zverev also refuted all the allegations placed by Olya Sharypova, stating that they weren’t true at all. He had no idea why she said the things she did, and hoped they could deal with it amicably.
Alexander Zverev will be looking to ignore these personal problems as he steps onto the court at Paris Bercy. He is arriving fresh from two commanding title victories in his home country, at the Cologne ATP250 events.
