The New York Jets are approaching the final game of the 2024 regular season and it appears they have begun strategizing for next season, starting with the head coach position. However, one name linked to the role has shocked many fans, prompting a flurry of reactions on social media.
After firing Robert Saleh in the early days of October because of a 2-3 start to the season, the Jets promoted Jeff Ulbrich as the interim head coach until they find their next head coach. Firing Saleh hardly did any good to the way as they endured another playoff elimination– marking their 14th consecutive postseason drought.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Jets have approached their former head coach, Rex Ryan, and scheduled to interview him for the again-vacant position next week on Tuesday. The franchise has decided to talk to him once the regular season officially concludes for them on Sunday after the Week 18 matchup against the Miami Dolphins.
Sources: Former #Jets coach Rex Ryan is set to interview with the Jets on Tuesday, an opportunity for Ryan to state his case to his old team.

Ryan, a current ESPN analyst, has publicly stated his desire for the post he once held. He went 46-50 for NYJ with a 4-2 playoff record. pic.twitter.com/cTZ2EwyEnD
The veteran head coach has both bitter and sweet memories of his time in New York. He joined the team as head coach in 2009 and advanced to the AFC championship game in both of his first two seasons. However, his downfall began in 2011, and the following three years were marked by disappointment, ultimately leading to his departure in 2014.
The head coach position isn’t the only one the Jets are hoping to revamp, as veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams are also expected to bid adios to the team after the end of the regular season.
Fans react to Rex Ryan interviewing for Jets’ HC job
After two back-to-back disastrous seasons despite having a four-time NFL MVP Rodgers, the Jets are seeking a desperate turnaround next season. However, fans aren’t too thrilled after hearing the name of the head coach-turned-analyst Ryan especially because of his disappointing stint with Green Gang.
“Never take the call from your ex,” one fan exclaimed on X, addressing the 62-year-old former NFL head coach. Another wrote, “That like getting back with your ex wife. There a reason why it ended badly.” Here are some of the fan reactions:
Rex Ryan… Aaron Rodgers… Davante Adams…. The Golden Triangle

People who want him are overly emotional. He has been out the game for years, this is purely fan fiction to hope for a great return. Leave the past in the past

Bro I just can't picture ESPN analyst Rex Ryan as a head coach for the Jets

The ESPN analyst, as well, has expressed his desire to return to the role he once had in New York. Besides Ryan, the Jets have also been linked to Mike Vrabel and Ron Rivera, both of whom have a better experience of leading teams to the playoffs.
