Tennis icon Roger Federer remains one of the best players to ever grace the court. His friend and counterpart Rafael Nadal also holds the same status and have won a remarkable 42 Grand Slams together. Nevertheless, the young generation of players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have been dubbed to be like them but Federer believes it’s still too early to compare.
Sinner dominated the start of the season when he won his maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. He backed it up by winning the Rotterdam title and the Miami Open. His great run of form goes back to October last year and he has been consistent with his game. However, he failed to win a clay title this season and never reached any final.
On the other hand, Alcaraz has taken the spotlight after recently winning his maiden French Open, making him the youngest player to win Grand Slams on all surfaces. Nonetheless, he began the season poorly and suffered a shocking defeat to Nicolas Jarry in the Argentina Open. But, in March everything changed after successfully defending the Indian Wells Masters.
For Federer comparing their journey to his and Nadal’s is too early because both players were very consistent at their games. Federer got to 18 out of 19 Grand Slam finals from 2003 to 2008. Nadal won the French Open a record 14 times losing only four times in the competition.
Sinner and Alcaraz like me and Nadal? It's still early, but Jannik and Carlos are from the same generation and are very strong. It seems to me that they respect each other a lot. They started off on the right foot, theirs promises to be a great challenge. It's nice to see them play.Roger Federer said via gazzetta
Federer retired from the sport in 2022 while Nadal is probably in the final phase of his career. Alcaraz and Sinner will hope to pass the grass season test with flying colors as they feature in Queen’s Championship and Halle Open respectively.
Roger Federer lauds Jannik Sinner, admits he deserves to be World No.1
Roger Federer has revealed that Jannik Sinner deserves to be World No.1 and that he is a ‘sweet guy.’ The Italian claimed the ATP No.1 after Novak Djokovic withdrew from the French Open after the fourth round due to a right knee injury.
The Italian who is yet to win a title since March capitalized on Djokovic’s bad form to leapfrog the Serbian. However, Federer revealed that he has been following the Italian rise with great interest.
It's fantastic that an Italian is No. 1. Sinner deserves it, he's a great guy, very sweet. I follow him with great interest.Roger Federer added
Sinner returned to the court for the grass season after failing to win a clay title. He took on Tallon Griekspoor and beat him in a three-setter.
