Romelu Lukaku and several Belgium teammates celebrated their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 victory over the United States by performing a dance associated with U.S. President Donald Trump following their 4 and 1 win in Seattle.

Lukaku, who came off the bench, scored Belgium’s fourth goal to seal the result. After finding the net, the Napoli striker ran toward the stands, cupped his hands around his ears and then joined teammates in performing Trump’s signature arm pumping dance that became widely known during his 2024 presidential campaign.

The celebration quickly gained attention on social media because it came after days of controversy surrounding the eligibility of United States forward Folarin Balogun.

Belgium’s official social media account also referenced the controversy after the match. The team posted a photo of Lukaku with the caption, “overturn this,” a clear nod to the debate over Balogun’s red card suspension before the knockout match. Belgium advanced to the quarterfinals with the victory, where the team will face Spain.

The celebration came after President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged that he had contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension before the Round of 16.

Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump confirmed he asked FIFA to review the decision but said he did not instruct the governing body on the outcome. “All I did was ask for a review,” Trump said. “I didn’t say, ‘You have to do this.’”

Trump also defended his position on the incident, saying, “I didn’t think it was a foul. I thought it was two great athletes that crashed into each other and got entangled.”

FIFA later suspended Balogun’s automatic one match ban, allowing the Monaco forward to play against Belgium. The decision drew criticism from Belgian football officials and prompted the Belgian football federation to challenge Balogun’s eligibility before the match.

After Belgium’s victory, midfielder Nicolas Raskin said the squad felt a “sense of injustice” over the ruling, while captain Youri Tielemans added, “We told ourselves we had to respond on the pitch. That’s what we did.”

Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia revealed Balogun spoke with him after the match and praised the forward’s gesture. “I really liked that,” Garcia said.

“It’s not his fault, he’s not the one to blame and that’s what I told him.” Garcia also said the controversy did not distract his players, adding, “Regardless of the US starting line-up, what really mattered to us is our game plan. The group is very mature. I told them what matters the most is us.”

Belgium’s 4-1 victory eliminated the United States from the tournament and sent the Red Devils into the World Cup quarterfinals against Spain.
