The Pittsburgh Steelers came into this season with a plan of action at the quarterback position. Start Russell Wilson and then, depending on how he played, slowly introduce Justin Fields into the lineup. But injuries brought out a completely different scenario.
The younger QB started all five games and won his first three. The next two losses, though, have brought up the question of where the veteran should start. Former NFL star Cam Newton had a solution.
The former league MVP was on First Take as part of his first official show. When the panel started talking about the situation developing in Pittsburgh, Stephen A. Smith asked Newton his view.
Cam Newton summed it up by saying that the situation has gone too deep for Russell Wilson, as the team has played five games and become comfortable with Fields as their quarterback.

To change it now would lead to confusion, especially in the offensive game. That could have repercussions if the team does not win games. The only way it can work out is if the Super Bowl-winning QB can take over games and win them.
Otherwise, as Newton said, the Pittsburgh Steelers should use the veteran as a trade piece. His veteran minimum contract and his experience could net them an impactful player. They need pieces if they want to reach the playoffs.
Russell Wilson was supposed to be the bridge for Justin Fields
When the Pittsburgh Steelers traded for Justin Fields, it was done with the idea of developing him over the course of time. The younger QB was to learn from his experienced vet so that the franchise had a capable QB for their future. But circumstances have changed and possibly even the dynamics of the team.
Before a season, changes to the roster are part and parcel of the game. But in between a season, it has a tendency to break team chemistry. In his last two games, the young QB did not throw an interception, but also could not play with his early season efficiency as the team struggled to win close games.
There is a chance HC Mike Tomlin might give him the keys to the next couple of games, just to see how the former Chicago Bears QB adjusts and fixes his mistakes. If he does, Cam Newton’s words might seem loud enough to draw their attention.
