Devin Haney filed a lawsuit against Ryan Garcia on Friday in New York. The undefeated boxer is seeking damages for battery, fraud, and breach of contract. This was in connection with Garcia’s doping violation after their April title fight in Brooklyn, New York. Garcia knocked down Haney three times in a major upset decision victory.
But the result was later changed to a no contest after Ryan Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug ostarine. He received a one-year suspension and a fine exceeding $1.2 million after settling with the Athletic Commission. ‘King Ry’ has now taken to his Instagram to clap back for getting sued by the ‘Dream.’
Haney is now seeking unspecified damages, claiming that Garcia committed battery because ‘his contest was limited to a boxing bout held fairly and under the rules.’ The 25-year-old boxer accused Garcia of committing fraud, claiming he ‘tried to make weight and failed.’ Garcia weighed in at 143.2 pounds for a fight scheduled at 140 for Haney’s WBC junior welterweight title.
The fight only took place after Haney agreed to a deal following the weigh-in. With Garcia ineligible to win the title. The 26-year-old later asserted that he intentionally missed weight. Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) can seek reinstatement in April. Meanwhile, Haney (31-0, 15 KOs, 1 No-Contest) currently has no scheduled fights and has not competed since their bout.
