British boxer Sandy Ryan has accused her New York title fight opponent Mikaela Mayer of something bizarre. Mayer staged a pre-fight stunt allegedly; Ryan was hit by an open paint can. This happened as she was leaving her hotel earlier in the evening. By her account, the NYPD was notified of the vandalistic intentions.
The build-up to the MSG fight was personal, as Ryan had worked with Mayer’s longtime trainer Kay Koroma. Mikaela Mayer parted ways with Koroma when he decided to work with Ryan, which she took as a betrayal. Mega brawls at fights aside, this was a new color (pun intended) of bad blood. Sandy Ryan was on her way from her hotel to the venue on Friday when an open paint can from an unidentified man hit her. She said she felt something “smash” into her stomach.
She and her team told ESPN they believed it was someone from Mayer’s camp. The Brit got off without any major injury. She continued on to the venue after changing in her hotel room. The boxer provided a few snippets on it, along with updates. Posting on social media on Saturday, Ryan said she was still “trying to process” the attack. She added that the team had obtained CCTV footage of the incident and were liaising with authorities.

Sucker punching the wrong party, lashing out dirty at face-offs, wasting and mouthing off; these are parcels of the sport. However, bad blood boiling to alleged preemptive attacks is a new one. Tensions were high, despite Ryan denying poaching her coach. Ryan said that she had no respect for her opponent and had accused her of “trash talk”. However, the new incident rocked her more than she could handle as she dropped the result in her rival’s favor.
Mikaela Mayer Vs. Sandy Ryan Results
In a fantastic fight, Mikaela Mayer beat Sandy Ryan by majority decision (95-95, 97-93, 96-94) to win WBO welterweight championship on Friday. The event took place in the Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden. Mikaela Joslin Mayer (20-2, 5 KOs), former unified female super-featherweight and 2016 Olympics alum, served a hard-hitting truth that she is just better.
Before the event even started, the fight was spicing up with mounds of bad blood. An unknown assaulted Ryan (7-2-1, 3 KOs) with red paint, which she said affected her in the ring. This was her version of entitled menace boxer shenanigans (no, not that kind) that got to her.

To be honest though, one couldn’t tell as Sandy Ryan was spectacular in defeat. She put Mayer under a lot of pressure, especially in the second half. This was the kind of good input bit by bit, in pockets, that turned even non-believers into ardent fans of boxing skills.
However, two judges scored the fight in Mayer’s favor with her length, combinations, uppercuts, and reach. Both women had their moments. Ryan had Mayer on the ropes with a huge left hook in R4. To her credit, she never backed down. She just had the better showing. Hurting Ryan twice, last time in the 10th frame, she got the majority nod, Mayer, not afraid to flout and tout, also made it clear she would prefer to pursue unifying the welterweight titles.
