England international Sam Billings etched his name in history books after captaining Oval Invincibles to a third successive Hundred title, winning an entertaining final against Trent Rockets. It places Billings in an elite group of T20 captains, alongside cricketing legends like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

The Hundred has gained a lot of popularity among cricket lovers, and it successfully completed its fifth season this week since its inception in 2021. So far, only three teams have won the Hundred title: Southern Brave in 2021, Trent Rockets in 2022, and Oval Invincibles, who have achieved a rare three-peat by winning in 2023, 2024, and 2025. It makes them the most successful franchise in the competition’s history.

In the recently concluded 2025 Hundred season, the London-based franchise made it to the final after finishing first in the standings, with six wins out of eight group stage matches. In the final against Trent Rockets, the Invincibles posted a first innings total of 168/5 in their 100 balls. Will Jacks top-scored with 72 runs off 41 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes, while Jordan Cox scored a crucial 40 off 28 balls.

At the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, Trent Rockets, in response, could only manage to score 142/8, falling short by 26 runs at the end. Despite a late surge from Marcus Stoinis, who scored 64 off 38 balls, it was not enough to secure the win. A strong English foundation, excellent all-round display and a talismanic leader in the form of captain Sam Billings, helped Oval Invincibles do the unthinkable by winning a third consecutive Hundred title.

While Billings had an underwhelming season with the bat, scoring only 53 runs in nine matches, his leadership has earned him a place in the record books. He joined an elite list of players who have won the most number of T20 titles, with five to his name. In addition to his three Hundred titles, the 34-year-old had also captained the Dubai Capitals to their maiden ILT20 title earlier this year and led the Kent Spitfires to the Vitality T20 Blast title in 2021.

Billings has not been called up to play for Three Lions since 2022. Despite that, he now finds his name among legends like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. Dhoni tops the list with nine T20 titles as captain. Rohit Sharma is second with eight, most recently winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. Billings is now tied for third place with former Pakistani all-rounder Shoaib Malik, who also has five T20 titles as captain.

Nonetheless, Sam Billings and his Oval Invincibles’ victory further strengthens their legacy as the most decorated franchise in the Hundred’s history. Billings will now turn his attention to other T20 leagues outside of England, including the upcoming Big Bash League and SA20 seasons.
