Sanju Samson, the talented wicketkeeper-batter of India, has expressed his desire to play red ball cricket for the Indian cricket team. He does not want to just play white ball cricket for Team India. Samson also revealed that before the start of the Duleep Trophy, he was informed to play more domestic cricket in red ball format as the leadership group within the Indian team management are thinking of considering him in the longest format of the game.

Samson has not made his position a certainty in the white ball team so far. He has not got enough chances to make stake his claim in a spot within the Indian team and also hasn’t stamped his authority with consistent performances in the limited opportunities.

I believe I have the skill set to succeed in red-ball cricket and I just don’t want to be restricted to just white-ball cricket. I desire to play Tests for India. Before the Duleep Trophy, the leadership group had told me that they were considering me for red-ball cricket and asked me to take it seriously and play more Ranji Trophy matches.

Samson was asked to open the innings in the recently concluded three match T20I series against Bangladesh and he came out with flying colors. He smashed a century in the final T20I of the series in Hyderabad and helped India post a mammoth total of 297 runs in their 20 overs.

Sanju Samson has revealed that Gautam Gambhir has backed him for a spot in Indian team

Samson has spoken about the support that Gautam Gambhir has been providing him in the national setup from the time he became the head coach of Team India. He stated that Gambhir believes in his talent, has backed him to play freely right from the start and has told him to not be afraid of playing his shots.

In the red-ball setup, Rishabh Pant has made his comeback and Dhruv Jurel is the back up of Pant. Pant has been performing consistently well and is a match winner for the team in Tests. Samson, meanwhile, has scored 3819 runs at an average of 38.96 in 64 first-class games.

It remains to be seen if Samson does get a chance in the red-ball format. However, for now, he needs to work on getting his position fixed in the white-ball format. With the backing of Gambhir, it feels like the time has finally come for Samson to get a fair share of matches to secure a place in the Indian team.
