Although Sean McDermott no longer manages the Buffalo Bills, he still believes the Bills possess enough firepower to win the Super Bowl. McDermott sees the Bills facing off against the Los Angeles Rams in the final.
The Bills hired McDermott in 2017. Over the next nine seasons, the Bills won the AFC East five straight times. Last year, the Bills conceded the divisional crown to the New England Patriots, despite winning 12 games.
A win over the Jacksonville Jaguars set up a blockbuster matchup against the Denver Broncos. Buffalo lost the fixture by just three points. It was their fourth defeat in this stage.
The Pegula family, owners of the Bills, fired McDermott shortly after another disappointing exit. Months have passed since then, but McDermott still has a soft corner for his former team. Speaking to Rich Eisen, the 52-year-old predicted that the Bills will play against the Rams in the Super Bowl.
It’d be a great Super Bowl. Those [Los Angeles] Rams. Listen, people ask me all the time, ‘Hey, do you still root for your old team?’ And I said, ‘Why wouldn’t I?’ Right? Of course I do. I mean, the impact that you want to have as a head coach on a team and a community, that’s one thing. But, man oh man, the impact that that team, that building, and that community had on me and my family, we’ll remember that for the rest of our lives, Rich, and that’s part of sports, right?

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen ranked second on the NFL’s Top 100 players list, only behind the Rams’ edge rusher and reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett. By default, Allen is the best quarterback in the league.

In the offseason, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane added veteran wide receiver DJ Moore to a receiver room that has Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer, and Khalil Shakir. James Cook led the league with 1621 rushing yards on 309 carries and scored 14 total touchdowns last year.
Beane brought in experienced edge Bradley Chubb to replace the outgoing Joey Bosa. He further added 2x Super Bowl winner Mike Danna. CJ Gardner-Johnson, Maxwell Hairston, Cole Bishop, and Damar Hamlin solidify the secondary.
McDermott remains without a job for now. He still plans to coach in the NFL if the chance arrives.
Sean McDermott backs Joe Brady to succeed with Bills
The Bills’ front office replaced McDermott with Joe Brady. Brady rose through the ranks in Buffalo from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. Allen won a league MVP in 2024, Brady’s first year as the offensive signal-caller.

The Pegula family saw Brady as the right candidate to take the job, even though he has no prior head-coaching experience. Experts weren’t sold on this appointment, and many have projected that Brady would be sacked earlier than his predecessor.
McDermott touched upon the subject in a roundabout way on the Rich Eisen Show.
There [are] not many [coaches] that come into a job basically standing at the doorstep and knocking on the door of the Super Bowl. When I came into the job, there was a 17-year playoff drought. Most coaches come into a job where the organization is sick or unhealthy in some way. Joe’s coming into a job in a unique fashion, and I think they are well positioned.

McDermott did not have head coaching experience when the Bills hired him. He came into a delicate situation. Tom Brady and the Patriots had dominated the AFC East for decades, and the Bills hadn’t qualified for the postseason for 17 seasons.
In McDermott’s first year, the Bills went 9-7 with Tyrod Taylor as the starting quarterback and ended their playoff drought. Allen took over the following year. In Allen’s third year as the starter, the Bills reached their first conference championship game since Jim Kelly’s era in the early 90’s.
Allen led the Bills to another AFC title game in 2024. The Super Bowl has eluded the team. Then again, McDermott has faith that Brady can take this Bills team to the promised land.
I have all the confidence in Joe Brady moving forward for the Buffalo Bills.

For Sean McDermott to still believe in Josh Allen, Joe Brady, and the defense says what kind of person he is. No resentment. Picking the Bills to go to the Super Bowl. He gets it. #BillsMafia

McDermott ended his Bills head coaching stint with a 98-50 regular-season record. He went 8-8 in the postseason. Buffalo went 3-0 in the preseason. The Bills travel to Houston to face the Texans on opening day.
