Sevilla are the Europa League Champions again after defeating Inter Milan 3-2. After an highly entertaining first half, Diego Carlos’ overhead kick in the second half proved to be the winner. The bicycle kick was deflected in his own net by Lukaku. Sevilla who were never defeated in the Europa League final, maintain their record after a hard-fought win.
Sevilla have proved their dominance in the Europa League yet again with another title. Julen Lopetegui has led this side very well to glory. After finishing 4th in La Liga, Sevilla end their season with a Europa League title. The jubilation and tears of joy was there to be seen in the Sevilla camp as soon as the final whistle blew.
The match was a highly entertaining contest, with the first half ending 2-2. Inter Milan got the lead in the match when Lukaku was brought down after a brilliant counter. The Belgian made no mistake from the spot to hand Inter the lead.
However, the lead lasted just few minutes as Luke De Jong’s brilliant header restored the parity. Jesus Navas’ cross from the right was met by De Jong who headed it past Handanovic. Set pieces was the key again when Sevilla took the lead through De Jong. An Ever Banega freekick was headed again by De Jong to hand Sevilla the lead.
The topsy-turvy contest was an exciting watch for the neutrals. The match took another turn, this time through an Inter Milan freekick. Brozovic’s set piece was headed in by Godin minutes after Sevilla’s 2nd to equalise again at 2-2. The teams went at half time evenly poised after a brilliant half of football.
The second half was not played at the same pace as the first, but it did not disappoint. Inter got their best chance through Romelu Lukaku who was slipped through on goal. However, Bounou made himself big to get the block and prevent Inter from taking the lead.
Lukaku and Lautaro as a pair failed to shine which helped Sevilla’s cause. In a match, where set-piece played an important part, it was another one to get the 3rd goal. It was yet another freekick, tucked into box, Diego Carlos responded with a brilliant overhead kick. Carlos’s bicycle was deflected by Lukaku to hand Sevilla the lead again in 78th minute.
That proved to be the difference in the end, as Sevilla became the Europa League champions again. Sevilla’s dominance in the Europa League continues with six finals and six victories in UEFA Cup and the Europa League.
Conte’s men sat devastated on the turf as they look back on this season. Inter came so close, but they were yet so far. After losing Serie A by 1 point, a defeat in the Europa League finals to add to it.
Conte and Inter Milan will try again next year while Sevilla prepare themselves for the UEFA Super Cup against the Champions League winner.
