This week, Shane Lowry is once again teaming up with Rory McIlroy. The two golfers entered the first round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Thursday as the defending champions. Following the performance, Lowry dropped a 3-word reaction following a hilarious blunder with McIlroy.

After an incredible victory at the 2023 Ryder Cup, McIlroy asked Lowry to be his partner for this only official team event of the PGA Tour. Last year marked McIlroy’s first appearance in this event.

That time, the All-Irish duo went on to lift the title after overcoming the team of Martin Trainer and Chad Ramsey in a playoff round. The defending champions fired an opening round score of 64 and were 8-under par for the event.

While their score was good, there seemed to be some coordination issue between them. While celebrating one of their shots, the two made a hilarious blunder. While McIlroy went for a high-five, Lowry extended his fist bump to celebrate the moment.

Taking to his X account, Lowry then hilariously shared two images of this and tagged McIlroy in the post. In this, he hilariously expressed that they needed to some more work on this.

Needs some work @McIlroyRory

The team of McIlroy and Lowry made 7 birdies and 1 eagle during the first round. Despite ending the first round 6 shots off the top of the leaderboard, the reigning champions were satisfied with their performance on Thursday.

Shane got off to a really good start. I didn’t do anything. Shane joked I could have got a couple extra hours in bed if I wanted to. I played a bit better coming in. It was okay.

Rory McIlroy told the reporters in the press conference as per PGA Tour

The team of McIlroy and Lowry started the event on the back nine. Lowry made birdies on 3 of the team’s first 4 holes and then made par on the 14th hole after McIlroy made a bogey. The 2019 Open Championship winner then made another birdie on the par-5 18th hole.

McIlroy then took charge and made an birdie and eagle on holes 1 and 2. Last year the duo carded a score of 61 in the first round.

Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy have lot of work to do in Zurich Classic of New Orleans

The team of Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy started their title defense with a score of 64. While, such a score is usually considered great, they still have lot of work to do to catch the leaders of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

The Zurich Classic is known as a low-scoring event. On Thursday, there were several low scores. The team of PGA Tour rookie Isaiah Salinda and Kevin Velo torched the playing field in the opening round.

The two golfers combined to shoot a score of 58, 14-under par, which turned out to be a record score at this course. Just an hour before them, the Hojgaard Twins, Nicolai and Rasmus, had tied the previous course record of 59, which was set by Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele in 2022.

As per the PGA Tour Communications, a total of 12 scores of 62 or better were recorded in the first round this year. This is the highest number of 62 or better scores recorded in a single round since the Zurich Classic became a team event in 2017.

To win from this position, Lowry and McIlroy will need to up their game a little bit if they are to defend their crown. Any like many other PGA Tour events, the Zurich Classic does feature a cut as well.
