Saraya, who’s better known to wrestling fans as Paige, had a stint as the general manager of SmackDown back in 2018. Just prior to the Brit assuming that role, former Intercontinental Champion Shelton Benjamin returned to WWE after being away for 7 years. And they were set to be involved in an enticing on-screen pairing.

During a recent interview with Metro, the former Hurt Business member revealed that he had pitched an idea encompassing the former Divas Champion. Benjamin said that the plot would’ve had him starting off as Paige‘s bodyguard, at a time when she was the authority figure on the blue brand. The storyline was to turn romantic eventually. However, despite being initially ratified by the higher-ups, it never came to fruition.

History’s the preacher that most of the romantic angles WWE has done, they’ve always roped in numbers. Take, for instance, the love triangle between Lana, Rusev (now Miro), and Bobby Lashley. A similar case study can also be deduced from the ongoing drama featuring Women’s World Champion Liv Morgan and Dominik Mysterio, who’s in all sorts of trouble with Rhea Ripley now back in the mix.

The idea was I will start off as kind of her bodyguard, but I think it was going to turn romantic and that was all. They were all set to do that, and then it just didn’t happen.

On similar lines, the untold story of Benjamin and Paige would’ve been interesting, to say the least. The two quite never got a chance to work together on television. After the COVID era, the English wrestler joined All Elite Wrestling. On the other hand, Shelton was part of a stable led by Bobby Lashley that also included Cedric Alexander and MVP. The four men were excelling as a cohesive unit until one fine day when Vince McMahon decided the quartet had run its course and broke them up.

Shelton Benjamin bemoans missed tussle with The Bloodline in WWE

In the same conversation as above, Shelton Benjamin revealed what he thought was one of the biggest mishaps in pro wrestling. The former tag team champion rued his then-stable, The Hurt Business, for not being pitted against The Bloodline.

And one would imagine that’s a real blunder from WWE’s side of things. For someone as boorish as MVP, he had his match in Paul Heyman. Bloodline’s then-leader, Roman Reigns, would’ve gone on to collide with Bobby Lashley.

Jimmy and Jey, The Usos had Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin lined up on paper. It’s just that these forces of nature were never tested against one another. A few years from now, the fans might label this missed opportunity as one of the biggest what-ifs ever.
