The verdict decided by 50 voters in the race to determine the Most Valuable Player of the 2024-25 season is nothing short of controversial. Josh Allen beat out fan-favorite Lamar Jackson by a margin of 4 votes making it the closest race since Matt Ryan edged Tom Brady to win the honor in 2016.

In a bid to ensure transparency, the Associated Press revealed the list of voters and their five picks to win the MVP Award. This year marked the first time that Tom Brady was given a casting vote to pick the MVP and his pick is surprising.

Despite being a fan of Josh Allen, Tom Brady voted for Lamar Jackson as his first choice to win MVP. Following him were Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley, Ja’Marr Chase, and Joe Burrow. To the seven-time Super Bowl winner, Jackson’s 4,172 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 951 rushing yards eclipsed Allen’s numbers.

His third fourth and fifth picks were interesting. Brady was one of four voters to nominate Ja’Marr Chase whereas QB Joe Burrow went on to be featured 38 times throughout the list. Brady’s decision to pick Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen over Saquon Barkley was surprising because he could not stop raving about the running back’s stellar performance in his first year on a new team.

Saquon Barkley finished third in the race with a total of 120 points. While Josh Allen as the MVP was a decision that resulted in mixed reactions from fans, is well-deserved. The award is not given to the player with the most stats but to one who is the most valuable to his team. While both Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen are invaluable to their teams, the former was in a better situation than the latter. Despite this, Allen managed to beat Lamar Jackson and progress to the AFC Championship.

Lamar Jackson not winning the MVP set a new record by itself. This is the first time since 1987 that a quarterback who made it to the first-team All-Pro did not win the MVP. The list reveals a few interesting choices of votes. Jim Miller of SiriusXM’s choices were particularly shocking.

He voted for Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes in this particular order. He was the only voter who did not pick Allen or Jackson with the first two picks. Nevertheless, the AP’s initiative to ensure transparency is a welcome move.
