Simona Halep withdraws from Miami Open with right shoulder injury
Simona Halep
Third seeded tennis ace Simona Halep has withdrawn from the ongoing Miami Open in both the singles and doubles events due to an injury to her right shoulder. The Romanian had received a bye in the first round before she had defeated Caroline Garcia in a three-set encounter. She was set to face Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova in the third round and was the clear favorite ahead of the same.
However, due to her injury and subsequent withdrawal, Sevastova will receive a walkover and move to the last 16. Her withdrawal is also a blow to German Angelique Kerber who was her partner in the doubles event. Halep stated that she had begun to feel discomfort and pain at practice sessions before her matches. It is noteworthy that this was the 29-year-old’s first tournament since the Australian Open where she exited in the quarter final.
Simona Halep issues statement on withdrawal
Simona Halep issued a statement today confirming her withdrawal and talking about her injury. She said, “I’m very sorry I have to pull out of singles and doubles at the Miami Open, but my injury doesn’t let me play here as I expected. I’m sad that I can’t continue, I wanted to come here to give my best and play many matches but unfortunately I can’t. Hopefully next year I will be back healthy and better.“
She then thanked the organizers of the event saying, “I want to say a huge thank you to the Miami Open organisers and the WTA for all their efforts in staging this great event and for making us feel safe.“
Halep’s withdrawal has only added to the list of big names missing from the tournament. Serena Williams had already pulled out while Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem had also decided to give it a miss.
