When the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Russell Wilson, many lauded the move. The former Super Bowl champion clearly became the best option to be their starter this season. However, on the very next day, they traded for Justin Fields.
The questions since then have related to who will win the starting job. But Fields today made his intentions clear on how he sees it. Today after the organized team activities, Justin Fields was asked about the QB competition that is brewing.
I'm taking it day by day. I'm definitely competing. Russ knows that. We’re competing against each other every day. Him being out there for me, helps me get better, especially each other. I definitely don’t have the mindset of me just sitting all year. I’m coming in every day, giving it all I’ve got. I’m pushing him to be his best, and he’s pushing me to be my best each and every day. So, appreciate that.Justin Fields said
Fields essentially is not taking the situation by chance. He wants to take over the starting job sooner rather than later. The Pittsburgh Steelers were lauded for bringing in both the quarterbacks for literally nothing. Russell Wilson is on a bargain 1-year veteran minimum deal, and Fields is in a trade for a conditional 6th-round pick. They essentially cemented their quarterback room for at least the upcoming season.
Wilson is a Super Bowl champion and has had Pro Bowl-caliber seasons. Therefore, it is normal for him to be in, as head coach Mike Tomlin said, pole position to take the starting job. However, with his comment, it is clear that Justin Fields will push to take that job.
Justin Fields brought in to lead the Steelers in the future
Russell Wilson is 35 years old and has played 12 seasons in the NFL. As with most athletes, with age comes heightened injury concerns and a drop in overall play. But Wilson can still beat out most of the younger-generation quarterbacks currently in the league. This is the reason the Steelers gave him a prove-it 1-year deal.
Even if Wilson plays well, the notoriously stingy Steelers will not hand him any record-breaking contract. Therefore, most likely it will be Justin Fields taking over. Fields was often criticized for not meeting expectations. However, most in the league know that the Chicago Bears was not an ideal scenario for him to thrive.
Therefore, a year of learning from a quarterback 10 years his senior will only help him down the line. Head coach Mike Tomlin has seen the future. It has Justin Fields leading his team.
