Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ X accounts are full of opinions on various subjects, and often he posts philosophical stuff. The Greek is well aware of this, because when he was told by a user that he tweets like an 18-year-old, Tsitsipas’ answer was, “Still waiting for my tweets to finish puberty“.

But Tsitsipas’ mom, Julia Apostoli, just like the readers of his tweets, found his opinions surprising. During her interview with Sports Ru, Apostoli was asked about her son’s social media activities.

Believe me, several times, having read some of his posts or opinions, I stood with my mouth open and digested it all. And I tried to find something positive in it, but I have no influence.

But his opinions have also stirred controversy. Back in 2022, Tsitsipas wrote, “Modern feminism has swerved from gender equality into a cult of outrage that seeks to disparage men“. Because of such opinions, he has faced criticism from Serena Williams‘ former coach, Rennae Stubbs, who recently called him out on her The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast.

Because Tsitsipas is dealing with form issues, Stubbs took to X and wrote, “Hire me,” before explaining in her podcast that it was only a joke. She wondered whether the two-time Grand Slam finalist would hire a female coach because “he’s posted some really dodgy stuff on Twitter“.

Julia Apostoli thinks Stefanos Tsitsipas’ weakness became apparent while playing against Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

Stefanos Tsitsipas used to be a top 5 player, and for a long time, he was a part of the top 10. But this season, he dropped outside of the top 30 because of his poor performance. The World No.34 finished the season with a 22-18 win-loss record with just one title.

That lone trophy he clinched at the Dubai Open by defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 27-year-old was last seen in action at the US Open, where his run ended in the second round with a five-set defeat at the hands of Daniel Altmaier. Tsitsipas was scheduled to play the Shanghai Masters and the Vienna Open, but he withdrew from both due to his back problem, ending his season.

Amidst his struggles, his mother, Julia Apostoli, lauded him for his talent, but she also thinks Tsitsipas’ weakness became apparent when World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz and World No.2 Jannik Sinner started to dominate.

It used to seem like Stefanos had more potential. But then players like Sinner and Alcaraz arrived. And against them, many of his weaknesses become evident. Look, [Alexander] Zverev holds the third position in the world ranking. But is he really the third? Does he deserve that position? Sometimes his game crumbles so much that it’s simply impossible.

Julia Apostoli told Sports Ru

The last time Tsitsipas won multiple titles in a year was in 2022. Since then, he has played six finals, winning three titles. The last time Tsitsipas won a Big Title was at the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters.

Sinner and Alcaraz, on the other hand, have clinched a combined 26 trophies from 35 finals since 2024, winning the last eight Grand Slam titles. While last year, Sinner finished the season with the most titles (eight), this year, the six-time Major champion won the same number of titles, also the most on the men’s tour.

Tsitsipas, for the second consecutive time, failed to qualify directly for the ATP Finals. Last year, he came in as an alternate. Sinner took home the year-end championships trophy last year and defended it this season by defeating Alcaraz. In their head-to-head matchups, the 24-year-old trails 6-11, winning just two matches in their last nine meetings.
