Stephen A. Smith refuses to reveal the source for his claims about Jaylen Brown.
Despite having one of the largest contracts in the NBA, Stephen A. Smith stated that Jaylen Brown is not marketable on ESPN’s First Take. Smith claimed that the Boston Celtics guard has a narcissistic attitude which keeps him from being liked and further marketable.
This certainly did not sit well with Jaylen Brown. The star had an issue with Stephen A. Smith‘s source for his statement and the host simply read his text to make the claim. Brown demanded Smith reveal his source on X but the ESPN host refused. Smith defended himself as he revealed that the host was in reality supporting Brown.
First off, that’s not happening. It’s journalism. Not revealing sources. Secondly, if you continue to watch the segment, I completely disagreed with them, as did Kendrick Perkins. The point we were actually discussing is how under appreciated you are and why that may be, which is why I read the quote.Stephen A. Smith on X
The 56-year-old disclosed that the reason behind reading the quote was to defend the Boston Celtics star from the accusations. Further Smith called Brown ‘a good brother’ while he continued to support his misunderstood claims. The host even mentioned that Brown deserves the $300 Million contract.
Before Brown responded, NBA veteran Isiah Thomas came to the star’s support as he called out Smith. The Detroit Pistons star strongly stated that Brown is marketable and asked Smith’s source to reveal themselves. Smith then again, reassured his admiration towards Brown.
ESPN’s co-host Kendrick Perkins came to support Stephen A. Smith
Smith was not the only one who claimed to have respect and praise for Brown. After Thomas got into the mix and called out Smith, Kendrick Perkins had his co-host’s back. Perkins also took to X to clear the misunderstanding and explain the situation.
See the thing hate about Clips… is that @stephenasmith @RealJayWilliams and myself went on to praise Jaylen Brown about his leadership and especially the role he plays in the Black Community.Kendrick Perkins on X
Smith responded to Perk by thanking him and backing up his point. The TV host also called out the netizens for misinterpreting his words. Smith stated that he has not said a negative word about Brown and would like to move on from the topic.
Smith’s one statement created a lot of chaos and started online feuds. However, Smith and Perkins were being truthful. Perkins stated that Brown is underrated and Smith agreed with him as he clarified that the analysts do not appreciate the player enough.
