“I’ve always been into art”: Swimmer Lydia Jacoby opens up about identity struggle

USA Swimming Star Lydia Jacoby has had quite the stunning year, winning the 100m breaststroke gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics at the age of just 17. But not many people know about her other passions, which include fashion, creativity and everything in between.

The youngster plays several instruments, paints and will be applying for University of Texas to study textile and apparel design. “I’ve always been really into art and creative things. So I was in a bluegrass and folk band for five or six years called Snow River String Band when I was younger. We haven’t played together for a while now, but I play bass, piano, guitar, and I sing,” Jacoby told Olympics.com.

The Alaskan does not have to look far beyond to find creative buddies to jam with. Her teammates are a big part of her enjoying and exploring their other side. “There’s quite a big group of musicians. I think Katie Ledecky is a piano player. Pretty incredible. Elizabeth Beisel plays the violin. And then I think there’s some others. So yeah, we’re fun to get a little group together some time,” she said.
