The story of Yusra Mardini and Sarah Mardini is finally hitting the screen as ‘The Swimmers’ on Netflix. The film revolves around the remarkable journey of survival and heroism that the two sisters showcased when their world started falling out of their hands. The journey of how they fought the waves of Aegean Sea, their 45-minute boat ride turned into a three-and-a-half-hour swim.
Sarah Mardini was invited on TEDxLondonWomen to talk about the violence that erupted during Syrian Civil War. She expressed how she and her sister Yusra Mardini managed to save the life of 18 people by swimming with the boat to shore.
Sarah Mardini said when she was asked about the journey she and her sister made, “All my friends were either dead or moved to Europe, I was on my own that is why I wanted to leave and live my life.”
“You had to contact a smuggle to know hoe to reach Greece, we contacted a smuggler and he gave us a spot where we had to wait for him. When we meet, they drive you in a bus, your phones are off, the curtains are closed, you are not allowed to ask for bathroom,” she added.

“For 10 hours you were not human, just a number” Sarah Mardini shared the tough journey with her sister

“10 hours in a bus, you are not allowed to be a human, you just need to be a number.” Sarah Mardini said on the TED Talk, “He dropped us off and we were on an island where there was no human sense around it and we thought we’re gonna leave directly the same day but one day turned to four”
Sarah and Yusra Mardini were gifted swimmers, they now live with their family who were able to join them in the capital of Germany. A year later after the incident, Sara returned to Lesbos as the first Female Syrian volunteer to work with the Emergency Response Center International as a search and rescue swimmer and translator.
“We had to wait for the boat to arrive, we had no food, no water, no sleeping bags but we managed for four days.” They drank water and ate chocolate the whole time as they wanted to avoid going to the washroom. They then contacted the smuggler blackmailing him to take back the money if he doesn’t send a boat.
