“Can see how far I’ve come” – Swim queen Emma McKeon becomes most successful CWG athlete with 11th gold at Birmingham 2022

Ace Australian swimmer Emma McKeon wrote her name into the history books as the most successful athlete in the history of the Commonwealth Games after winning her 11th gold medal in the women’s 50m freestyle event. Aussies’ great day in swimming didn’t end here as the women’s freestyle relay team set Birmingham alight with a world record.
The kangaroos continued to cement their position atop the medal table on day three as well. The last time’s table-toppers further added nine golds across rugby sevens, gymnastics, swimming and track cycling to take the country’s total haul to 22 gold – double that of host nation England in second place.
In a stunning effort by the relay team of Ariarne Titmus, Madi Wilson, Kiah Melverton and Mollie O’Callaghan, Australia registered the world record timing of seven minutes and 39.29 seconds to better the mark of 7:40.33 set by China at the recent Tokyo Olympics. Following this historic moment at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, McKeon, who had faced stiff competition from the fastest qualifiers and compatriots Shayna Jack and Meg Harris, finished on top of the podium at Birmingham 2022.

The Wollongong native McKeon’s triumph follows her earlier victories at the ongoing CWG in the mixed 4×100 freestyle relay and women’s 4×100 freestyle relay. Notably, she also won four gold medals each at the 2018 Gold Coast and the 2014 Glasgow Games.
“It’s really nice to be mentioned alongside some of those names and I will be part of that history for years to come, hopefully,” McKeon said, as quoted by The Guardian. “They’re the ones who inspired me when I was young. I remember watching them on TV and that lit the fire in me to be where I am now.
“It is special. It makes me reflect on the last eight years since my first Commonwealth Games. I can see how far I’ve come as a person and an athlete.”
