He was born on 8 July 1991 in Breda, Netherlands to a Dutch father and a Surinamese mother. He caught everyone’s attention because of his brilliant defending technique during his time at Southampton which forced Jurgen Klopp to sign him up for Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk made his professional debut for the Dutch club Groningen on 1 May 2011 against ADO Den Haag. He spent two years at the club before making a move to Celtic FC in the Scottish league. He debuted for the Netherlands’ National team on 10 October 2015 in a 2–1 victory against Kazakhstan in a Euro CUP 2016 qualifier.
