Team USA coach Cheryl Reeve slams reporter for questioning WNBA rookie Caitlin Clark's Paris Olympics snub

Ever since Team USA announced their women’s basketball team for the Paris Olympics, Caitlin Clark has been on a tear in the WNBA. Improving her efforts in all aspects of her game, she has set some records in the process and helped her Indiana Fever string together a winning record. With that, fans are questioning the logic behind her exclusion. Knowing the sentiments, Minnesota Lynx and Team USA head coach Cheryl Reeve was asked about the situation.

It was ESPN reporter Myron Medcalf who asked her about Caitlin Clark‘s exclusion as well as her future in the USA national team. The 4-time WNBA champion coach responded:

Why the hell would I answer a national team question? I'm wearing Lynx. And I'm the head coach of the national team but I'm not the chair of the committee. Anybody want to venture into anything else?

Cheryl Reeve essentially slammed Medcalf for asking the question on a day she is focused on helping her team win against Clark and her Indiana Fever. However, she also deflected the question onto the selection committee.

It could be that she has no role in Team USA not selecting Caitlin Clark for the Paris Olympics. But it should also be noted that before the 2024 WNBA Draft, she was dismissive about the impact Clark had on the popularity of the game.

She tried to do the same before today’s game, but the sight of Target Center filled with Indiana Fever fans proved her wrong. Clark and her Fever went on to win the game. Pushing the point that maybe Clark deserved a role on the Olympic squad.

Caitlin Clark could be a late addition to Team USA

With the WNBA season about to go into the Olympics break, question marks are being raised as to the health of those who are on the roster. Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and Napheesa Collier have missed games recently due to injury. This has prompted several to wonder if Caitlin Clark has a chance to make the Team USA Olympics roster.

The chances are slim, considering she has not practiced with them for even one game. Chemistry is crucial when going up against international teams. However, Team USA still has time to send their confirmed list of entries. She might not get a lot of minutes with the veterans on the team. But even if she does provide an assist or two, it could mitigate any shortage of players and help win games.

Fans of the WNBA and especially Caitlin Clark would love it if she went to Paris. But as Angel Reese said recently, in all likelihood, the 2028 Olympics should see them play. Until then, the Indiana Fever guard has all the time to develop her game.
