Alexander Zverev has probably been the most improved player in the tennis world in 2021. The German has finally started to fulfil the potential he’s shown for a long time this year.

The 24 year old has looked like a strong contender to compete for the top honors once the dominance of the Big 3 is finally over. He has won 6 titles on the ATP Tour this year, including the year ending ATP Finals. Apart from that, he also won the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold.

Alexander Zverev has matured a lot in the course of 2021, turning into a consistent performer and performing well at the biggest of occassions. The World No.3 has revealed that he hopes that the strong finish to 2021 provides him momentum for 2022 to be his best ever season.

The German, who won two ATP titles in Madrid and Cincinnati respectively, and also reached the US Open semi-finals, will lead the German charge in January’s ATP Cup.

In a recent interview, the German talked about his evolution throughout the years. The German reflected on his solid 2018 and his poor 2019 seasons, reasoning that he was very young and inexperienced during his forgettable 2019 season and has since improved, as shown by his excellent 2021 performances.

“I won the finals in 2018 and had a really bad 2019. I hope I can change that. I hope I can do it differently. I was a lot younger back then. I didn’t know how to handle big titles maybe as well. I was 21-years-old going into the 2019 season. I do feel I’m a little bit of a different player but also I’m a different person, I think. I’ve had a lot more experience on the court, I had a lot more experience outside the court,” Zverev told the reporters.

He also revealed how more experience has not only helped him on the court, but off the court too. The German said that he can now handle the pressures of the media better and has more control over his emotions.

“I know how to handle maybe the media a little bit better. I know how to handle pressure maybe a tiny bit better, as well. After the Olympics I continued to play great tennis. I hope I can still use that momentum going into 2022, and hopefully have the best season of my career so far,” added the German.

Zverev and the rest of the younger generation would look to finally overthrow the Big 3 in the new season after a very encouraging 2021 where Daniil Medvedev won the US Open title and Zverev won the ATP Finals.
