World No.4 Alexander Zverev continued his unbeaten run, as he progressed into the quarterfinals of the 2021 US Open after defeating Italian 13th seed Jannik Sinner. He beat the Italian in straight sets 6-4,6-4,7-6(7) and in the process, extended his winning streak to 15.

Zverev hasn’t lost a match since winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics where he beat Novak Djokovic in the semifinal. He then also won the Cincinnati Masters and is one of the main contender to challenge Djokovic this fortnight in New York.

The fourth seed was to face his biggest challenge of the tournament so far, Sinner, who has been in good form too. But Zverev showcased his ‘A’ game on court and was dominant right from the start. His serve has been superb all week and so was the case against Sinner in the opening set. Apart from a few hiccups, Zverev capitalized a break of serve and won the first set 6-4.

Sinner tried to fight back in the second set but the German was too solid on the baseline. She managed to get the break after a few tight games and went on to win the set 6-4. The third set was the tightest of the three but once again started with Zverev getting a break early on. He lead 4-2 and that is when Sinner started to pull a mini comeback. He broke Zverev to draw level and even took the lead and had set points.

But the roller coaster set eventually went into the tiebreaker, with Sinner leading for most of part. He again had set points but couldn’t convert courtesy some amazing aces from Sascha. The German at the end, only needed one match point to wrap up the match and enter the last 8.

Zverev will face either Reilly Opelka or Lloyd Harris in the quarterfinal.
