2020 US Open runner-up Alexander Zverev started his 2021 run on a very positive note with a convincing win over American Sam Querrey at Arthur Ashe stadium. The fourth seed beat the American in straight sets 6-4,7-5,6-2 to advance into the second round. Zverev has been in amazing form off late and is currently on a 12-match winning streak after winning the Olympic gold and the Cincinnati title.

He carried his golden run at Flushing Meadows right from the word go. He was serving well and had an amazing first serve win percentage in the first set. Querrey too matched him in the rallies but a late break allowed Zverev to sneak away with the first set 6-4. The second set was also closely fought with each player playing safe on serve. The American veteran was serving amazing but again a lapse in concentration late in the set saw Zverev taking a break of serve and then the set 7-5.

The third set had Zverev painted all over it. The German fourth seed raised the level of his game when needed the most and broke Querrey early on, unlike the first two sets. He wasn’t done yet and broke him once again to take a decisive double break’s lead and eventually won the set 6-2.

In the post match interview, Zverev addressed the fans. “It is great to be back,” he said.

“I still remember last year’s final. I still remember the four-hour match that I lost, unfortunately. It is great to be back on Arthur Ashe Stadium and have the fans back, we definitely missed them last year.”

Zverev is on a 12-match winning streak and hopes that his streak will be of 18 in a fortnight’s time. ”I hope in two weeks’ time I will be on an 18-match winning streak,” Zverev said.

“Novak [Djokovic] is chasing history to win all four majors for the first time since Rod Laver [1969], but I think the young guys are going to try and get in the way of that. I am looking forward to maybe giving him a challenge as well.”

He added: “I have been working extremely hard on a lot of things, like my serve. But when I am happy it is when I am playing well. That is the most important thing. The past year has been very good for me.”

Zverev will now face Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round on Thursday.
