‘Always focussing on the next moment!’ Rising star Jenson Brooksby shares his goals for the current season after a breakout 2021
Jenson Brooksby
Jenson Brooksby had an exceptional 2021, for which he was voted as the 2021 newcomer of the year. reached his first ATP tour finall at the 2021 Hall of Fame Open in Newport, defeating Evgeny Donskoy, Denis Kudla, Peter Gojowczyk and 7th seed Jordan Thompson. He became the second-youngest player to reach the final in the 45-year tournament history on Newport’s grass courts, but ultimately lost to Kevin Anderson in the final.
Brooksby, aged 20 then, became the youngest American to reach the US Open fourth round since a 20-year-old Andy Roddick did so in 2002, where he upset Aslan Karatsev in a five set thriller.
Brooksby full of motivation ahead of the 2022 season
Jenson Brooksby, unfortunately, missed the Australian Open due to a positive Covid test. However, the youngster played in the ATP Challenger event in Columbus, where he did well to reach the semi-finals.
In a recent interview with ATPTour.com, the American spoke about how it is important in tennis to maintain focus and keep focussing on the next moment. He added that it is very important to keep proving yourself, and despite enjoying the moment, one has to focus.
“In tennis you have to focus on the next moment because at the end of the day, this year is a new year. You have to prove yourself and keep getting better. There are things in the moment that I do enjoy, but you have to keep your focus on,” he said.
The youngster is highly driven, as is proved by his interviews and off-field conduct. The youngster is a maximizer, putting his professional career before anything else. This has led him to rise from outside the top 500 in the world rankings to just outside the top 50 in the space of a year.
“I think it does take a lot of discipline to not look things up or be distracted by other things, but I’ve done it enough lately where it’s become simpler for me and I’m sure that’ll be the case as I keep doing that. All that matters for me at least is how I’m focussed on my process and how I’m getting better,” the American said on this matter.
Brooksby’s drive to be successful also means that he always looks to improve upon his performances. Despite his stunning rise over the last year, the American still plans on improving aspects of his game, especially in the mental department.
“[It is about] just really being physical in my playing and learning new things in the game, too. But also [it is] getting my mind to really just focus on a few things on court and compete, not overthink, which is what I do well. Sometimes it can be easy to get out of it. I think those few areas, at least right now, are what I’m hoping to improve on,” added the rising star.
