“This year I didn’t play so well” Andy Murray assesses his 2021 season and reveals goals for next season

Former World No. 1 and current World No. 143 Andy Murray ends the season with a defeat in the quarter-final at the 2021 Stockholm Open losing to eventual champion Tommy Paul. Murray finishes the season with a 20-16 win-loss record and his best results of the season came in Stockholm and Metz when he made it to the last-8 of both the tours.
Murray had hoped to get back in the Top-100 by the end of the season but given his low rank, he faced higher-ranked opponents in the early round that made life difficult for him. He still managed two Top-10 wins, defeating Hubert Hurkacz and Jannik Sinner with both the players ranked World No. 10 when they met Murray over the span of 3 weeks.
As per reports by Skysports, Murray has used this season for important learnings and plans to move into the 2022 season with confidence and hunger for better wins and also his first title since he last won in 2019 in Belgium at the European Open.
“I have a clear idea of the things I have to work on. This year I didn’t play so well, but I still managed to be competitive. It’s positive because I can definitely play better,” said Murray.
Andy Murray to skip events next year
The 34-year old who continues to play with a metal hip spoke about selecting events next year in order to look after his physical and mental well being as well. “Next year I don’t want to play competitions every week,” said Murray.
With Covid restrictions in place and different rules in different regions, Murray expressed his view of planning his season well in order to not over-work his body and at the same time continue playing at the highest level. While Murray is yet to comment on what will be his first tournament next season, the Brit might be seen playing in Abu Dhabi alongside Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem.
“I don’t know 100 percent if Abu Dhabi is happening or not, but certainly if I wasn’t going to go there I would definitely go away and practice for a little bit outdoors in the sun,” Murray had said earlier and continues to hold this stand keeping the fans in the unknown for his first tournament in 2022 and whether he makes the trip to Melbourne for the 2022 Australian Open.
