Medvedev, who is currently ranked as one of the finest tennis players in the world, will be contesting in his first tournament since losing in the Australian Open finals to Rafael Nadal. He was defeated by Nadal in a dramatic five-set encounter, 6-2 7-6 4-6 4-6 5-7. The World No. 2 had originally planned to play at the Rotterdam Open, but withdrew due to exhaustion. After a few weeks of recuperation, the Russian is likely to be in a better mental and physical state. If Medvedev wins the championship in Acapulco, he will have a chance to become the World No. 1 for the first time. 

Benoit Paire’s best result this year came in the third round of the Australian Open. In his first match, he beat Thiago Monteiro, then upset Grigor Dimitrov in the second round before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Paire returns in Mexico after a disappointing showing on the South American clay circuit, when he lost in the first round of all three events he entered. With the exception of his run in Melbourne, the Frenchman has lost in the first round of every tournament he has entered this season.
