Norrie has shown constant improvements in his game this year, and his performances on clay have just enhanced his reputation further. Norrie started the clay court leg of the season in Barcelona. He beat players like Karen Khachanov and David Goffin to reach the Quarter-finals of the competition, but Rafael Nadal ended his run at that stage.
In the Estoril Open, Norrie did one better and reached the Final. But again fell short, losing to Albert Ramos Viñolas. Norrie qualified into the main draw of the Italian Open and reached the second round too before losing to Spain’s Alejandro Fokina. At the Lyon Open, he beat Corentin Moutet in the first round. In the second he caused a huge upset by taking out Dominic Thiem, 6-3 6-2. In the Quarter-final he will face Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.
Rinderknech made his debut on the ATP Tour in March 2021, at the Open 123 in Marseille, and in his very first tournament went from qualifying till the Quarter Finals of the event. Here, he again qualified into the main draw. In the first round he beat World No. 101 Mikael Ymer of Sweden in three sets 6-3 6-7 6-2. In the second he took out rising tennis star Jannik Sinner in three sets 6-7 6-2 7-5.
