Coco Gauff bounced back from a slow start to her campaign last season by reaching the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, thus becoming the youngest American since Venus Williams in 1997, to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand slam at the age of 17 years 3 months. She lost in the second round at Flushing Meadows but rebounded soon by reaching the finals of Women’s Doubles with her partner Caty McNally.

Wang Qiang played only in the opening half of her 2021 season. She wasn’t able to follow up on her brilliant fourth-round finish at the Australian Open in 2020. The following season, she was knocked out in the first round itself at Melbourne Park. The former Chinese No.1 did not participate in the latter half of last season owing to travel restrictions and safety concerns due to COVID-19.

Coco Gauff has played two tournaments in the lead-up to the Australian Open 2022, WTA Adelaide International and WTA Adelaide International 2. She lost in the second round of her first tournament and then in the quarterfinals, her both losses were to eventual winners, Ashleigh Barty and Madison Keys respectively.

Meanwhile, Wang Qiang is yet to win a match this year, having lost both her qualifier matches at the WTA Melbourne (Summer Set 1) and WTA Adelaide International.

The American teen is the clear favourite going into the match as she had a better start compared to her opponent and also boasts a better head-to-head record.
