After Djokovic’s removal from the draw, Daniil Medvedev automatically became the favorite to win the Australia Open. He is the highest ranked player in the draw and is also the defending finalist. He won the US Open last year and had a good outing at the ATP Cup earlier this year where he won three good matches. In the first round at Melbourne Park, he blasted past Swiss Henri Laaksonen in straight sets 6-1,6-4,7-6(3) to book a second round spot.

Australian showman Nick Kyrgios is always a tough opponent given the level of uncertainty he brings. He played for he first time since Laver Cup last here here in Melbourne.
