After all the drama surrounding his participation, the top-seed and the 3-time defending champion Novak Djokovic will begin his title defence against compatriot in the first round of the Slam. The Slam will also be the season opener for Djokovic and alongside old rival Rafael Nadal, the two Big-3 members will be first to claim the 21st Grand Slam title. Djokovic last played a competitive match in the semi-finals of the 2021 Davis Cup Finals.

Unlike Djokovic, Miomir Kecmanovic will have played Tour matches before coming into the Slam. Kecmanovic played the ATP-250 event in Sydney where he started the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Stefano Travaglia before losing in straight-sets to top-seeded Aslan Karatsev.

This will be the second meeting between the two Serbians who met in the quarter-final of the 2021 Serbian Open with Djokovic winning the match 6-1, 6-3 and now leads the head-to-head tie 1-0.

Djokovic will come into the tie with a career hardcourt record of 377-50 and was 19-3 on the surface last season while she finished the 2021 season with a record of 55-7 across all surfaces. Kecmanovic will take the court with a career hardcourt record of 85-58 and was 6-11 on the surface last season and had a 17-27 record for the season across all surfaces.

Looking at these numbers and considering their form in the 2021 season, Djokovic will certainly be the favourite for the title but it could be a rough start for him as he returns to a competitive match after a month of absence from the Tour while Kecamnovic has surely shown signs of struggles.

Prediction: Novak Djokovic to win in 4-sets.
