‘Bad luck continues’ Emma Raducanu retires due to an injury mid-match after playing longest WTA match of the season
Emma Raducanu
World No. 12 and the top seed at the 2022 Guadalajara Open, Emma Raducanu had an unfortunate end to her first-round match at the tournament. Up against Daria Saville, Emma retired from the match with the score at 7-5, 6-7(7), 4-3 in favour of Daria, with the clock at 3 hours and 36 minutes.
Emma was 2 points away from clinching the match leading the match at 7-5, 5-3 (30-15). Daria however clawed her way back to win the second set and force a third set in the match having contested the first two sets for a total of 2 hours and 42 minutes. Emma asked for a trainer at the 3 hours 20-minute mark with Daria then leading 3-2 with the Brit receiving treatment off the court.
Emma continued to struggle with her hip and eventually had to give up and forfeit the match handing the win to Daria. This was Emma’s 4th injury issue in just 10 Tour appearances. At the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, she had breathing difficulty during her 4th round match and had to retire there as well. At the 2021 Transylvania Open, she was taken ill during her quarter-final run at the tournament.
The run in Transylavania Open remains Emma’s best run since she won the 2021 US Open. Having tested positive for Covid-19 during the season break in December, Emma’s bad luck continued at the 2022 Australian Open as well as her 2nd round defeat saw her battling blisters on her hand that made it difficult for her to even lift her racquet. With her injury today in Mexico, the youngster will be hoping to have a good injury-free season in the upcoming tournaments.
Emma Raducanu is now 1-3 in the 2022 season
Emma started her 2022 season at the 2022 Sydney Tennis Classic where she was defeated in the first round by Elena Rybakina. Elena won the match 6-0, 6-1 to defeat the reigning US Open champion. Emma picked her season’s first win in her Australian Open debut as she defeated former US Open champion Sloane Stephens 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 before losing to Danka Kovinic 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 in the second round.
With the 2022 Indian Wells Open being the next big event, Emma would look to make a good return having suffered a shocking first round defeat in last year’s edition that was held after the conclusion of the 2021 US Open.
