Ash Barty vs Katerina Siniakova: Preview

Ashleigh Barty

The Australian comes into this match after having beaten Anna Blinkova in two easy sets in the second round. She also beat Suarez Navarro in the opening round in three entertaining sets. The top-seed didn’t play any warm-up grass event in the lead up to Wimbledon. That said, Barty has shown little signs of any rustiness. In fact, given her grass court skills and variety, she is even billed by many as the top favourite to win the title at the All England Club this year. The top-ranked Barty has also tasted on the grass before after having won titles in Birmingham and Nottingham in 2019 and 2018 respectively. However, she is yet to get past the fourth round at Wimbledon. In all probability, she might snap that in the next few days.

On the other hand, the Czech player comes into this round after beating Coco Vandeweghe in three sets. She also beat Yafan Wang in the opening round. Siniakova is also one of the few players on the WTA tour who has spent considerable time on the grass court ahead of Wimbledon. The 25-year-old also reached the finals of Bad Homburg before losing to countrywoman Angelique Kerber. With six wins out of seven on grass this season, she is not going to fade away easily going ahead.

These two have never met on the WTA tour.

Both players will come into this match having spent adequate time on the grass by virtue of their first two round. Interestingly, both have also dropped a set each. Barty hit 33 winners in her second round match as compared to her opponent’s 19. The Aussie will also need to serve well to begin with and keep Siniakova guessing with all the chip and slice. That said, given her recent run the Czech is unlikely to go down without a fight in this match. Expect the match to go the distance with varying fortunes.

Match Prediction: Ash Barty should win in three sets.
