Matteo Berrettini vs Nikoloz Basilashvili: Preview
Italian Matteo Berrettini has been in amazing form this season. After reaching the quarterfinal at Roland Garros, he won the Queen’s Club Championship before reaching the final at Wimbledon where he lost to Novak Djokovic in 4 sets. He reached the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows where he once again lost to Djokovic after winning the first set. Last week he bowed out in the third round at Indian Wells to American Taylor Fritz. This week in Vienna, he won his opening round match against qualifier Alexei Popyrin in straight sets 7-6(3),6-3.
As for Nikoloz Basilashvili, he has blown hot and cold this season. He won the Qatar Open earlier this year and then won the Bavarian International. After a poor clay court season, he then reached the semifinals at Halle and also made it to the third round of the US Open. Last week at Indian Wells, he reached his maiden masters final where he lost to Cameron Norrie. At Vienna this week, he toppled Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round in three sets 7-5,4-6,6-3.
Matteo Berrettini vs Nikoloz Basilashvili: Head-to-Head
This will be the fifth meeting between the duo. Berrettini leads the H2H 3-1. They last met at Rome Masters earlier this year where Berrettini won in three sets.
Matteo Berrettini vs Nikoloz Basilashvili: Prediction
Based on season record and superior ranking, Berrettini should start the favorite. But given Basilashvili’s incredible run at Indian Wells, he himself will fancy his chances. The Georgian has already registered multiple wins against Top 10 players this season, his latest coming just a week ago and has got the arsenal to beat Berrettini. But the Italian is one of the strong contenders to go all the way this week and is expected to pass Basilashvili test.
Prediction: Berrettini to win in three sets.
