Matteo Berrettini had a debut to forger at the ATP Finals as he was forced to retire after the first game of the 2nd set. After losing in a 79-minute long 1st set against Alexander Zverev, Berrettini felt pain near his abdomen and despite receiving treatment in his medical timeout, he could not continue and had to retire from the match giving Zverev the win with the score then at 7-6(7), 1-0.

There has been no communication or update from Berrettini’s camp whether the Italian will not play again and the match is scheduled to go ahead as per schedule.

Hubert Hurkacz also comes into the match with a defeat in the previous round. Making his debut against defending champion Daniil Medvedev, Hurkacz won the first set but Daniil made a strong comeback to take the next two sets and start his title defence with a win. Medvedev won the match 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4, making the Hurkacz-Berrettini tie a knockout as the loser will get eliminated.

This will be the 4th meeting between the duo who last met in the semi-finals of the 2021 Wimbledon where Berrettini won in 4-sets and leads the head-to-head tie 2-1 with one of the win coming in the qualifying round of the 2018 Australian Open.

Looking at these numbers and their recent form in the past few weeks, Hubert Hurkacz seems the one to go ahead given Berrettini’s fitness concerns and if the Italian forfeits the match, the Polish youngster will still get a walkover win to keep him in contention for a spot in the semis.
