Canadian superstar Bianca Andreescu says she feels really good ahead of her return to Montreal, where she emerged champion in 2019. Bianca enters the Montreal showpiece as the number 2 seed and is currently ranked number 5 in the world.
Andreescu had an astonishing record of 48-7 in 2019 in the year she turned 19, but has only been able to compete in 19 singles matches since, owing to COVID restrictions and injuries too. She did not play at all in 2020, and most recently competed at Wimbledon this past June, losing in the first round to France’s Alize Cornet.
In a recent interview with Daily Hive, Bianca stated, “I’m feeling really good after a couple of downs over the last couple of months. But I’m feeling much better now, and ready to go.”
When asked about her aspirations to retain her title, the Canadian added, “I don’t want to really look at it as defending the title because that in itself puts a little bit of pressure on me, I kind of just look at it like I’m the champion… and I want to be the champion again.”
Bianca Andreescu talks about mental health issues
She missed out on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics citing “challenges we are facing as it relates to the pandemic”. She did, however, said she stayed up late nights to catch a glimpse of her compatriots in different fields.
“I definitely love that people are opening up about this because I don’t feel like it’s talked about enough,” Andreescu said when asked about Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka and their recent withdrawal episodes. “I’ve experienced it too… being a professional athlete isn’t easy.”
Andreescu will be looking to play her first hardcourt tournament since making the 2021 Miami Open final in April after going 3-4 through the clay and grass seasons. The North American hardcourts are where Andreescu thrives and she showed that during her breakout 2019 when the Canadian won Indian Wells and Toronto before going on to win the 2019 US Open a few weeks later.
