Home favorite Alexander Bublik has been blowing hot and cold post Wimbledon where he reached the third round. He followed it up with a semifinal finish at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships where he lost to Kevin Anderson. He then had a poor run at Washington Open, Toronto Masters, Cincinnati Masters and Winston-Salem Open where he couldn’t get past the second round.

He had another poor outing at the US Open where he lost in the second round to Jack Sock in five tight sets. This week in Nur-Sultan, he beat Miomir Kecmanovic in the Round of 16 in three sets after receiving a first round bye.

As for his opponent, Carlos Taberner, he has been a constant performer at the challenger circuit. After being knocked out of the first round at Flushing Meadows, he reached the semifinal of the Seville Challenger before losing to second seed Pedro Martinez. At the Astana Open, he got the better of Ricardas Berankis in the first round before beating Egor Gerasimov in three sets in the Round of 16.
