18-year old Carlos Alcaraz continues to impress the tennis fraternity with his skills. Having broken into the Top-20 already, the Spaniard has claimed two titles so far on the Tour and with consistent results even in the big competitions, greater things are surely expected from the youngster.

Having gone down in the 3rd round of the 2022 Australian Open to World No. 7 Matteo Berrettini in a nail-biting 5-set thriller, Carlos returned to action at the ATP-500 Rio Open 2022 played on clay. While he had many experienced players in the draw, the Spaniard went on to claim the title defeating 2nd seed Diego Schwarzman in straight-sets in the final.

The win also took him to the 20th spot on the ATP rankings, making him the quickest to do so, smashing countryman Rafael Nadal‘s record. He also overtook Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the tally for ATP-500 titles won on Clay as the two glorious 20-time Grand Slam champions have not yet won an ATP-500 title on clay.

“When he smells blood, Carlos is like a shark. When he has the opportunities in front of him, he does not hesitate too much, we always talk about the fact that it is better to try to concretize them with his game, giving all his potential. His way of playing, wanting to dominate all the time, helps a lot when it comes to getting the match. Sometimes it costs him a mistake or two, but it gives him more joy than sadness,” said Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Having won the title in Rio, Alcaraz chose not to make the trip to Mexico for the 2022 Acapulco Open and instead travelled back to his home in Spain. After returning a positive Covid test prior to Spain’s first match at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals last year, the teenager is all set to make his Davis Cup debut in a few days’ time with Spain beginning their journey to the Finals in Marbella where the matches will be played on Clay.

Alcaraz will return to Tour directly at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters and is likely to play at the 2022 Miami Masters before the Tour shifts its focus solely to the clay tournaments.
