World No. 1 Ash Barty shocked the world when she announced her retirement from tennis for the second time and it looks like the final one this time. The 25-year old who captured her 3rd Grand Slam title a couple of months ago at the 2022 Australian Open, says goodbye to the game ranked as the World No. 1 for 119 weeks with 112 of those being consecutive, the 4th longest streak on the WTA Tour.

Barty’s announcement came on 23rd March, nearly 1.5 months after she won the Australian Open title. Barty had won all 11 of her matches this week dropping a set only in one of them, her season opener in Adelaide and had won 10 consecutive matches in straight-sets with her last match being the finals in the Melbourne Park that saw her script history.

As reactions and wishes poured in for the 25-year old, compatriot and wheelchair tennis great Dylan Alcott also took to his official Twitter handle to congratulate Barty for a fantastic career as she bids adieu to the sport having dominated it massively, especially in the last 3 seasons, finishing the year as the World No. 1 for 3-years in a row starting 2019.

“Ash Barty. Amazing tennis player but an even better person. A champion in every sense of the word. Very proud of you mate,” tweeted Alcott who also retired after the Australian Open this year, finishing as the runner-up in what was his 8th consecutive Australian Open finals and the only defeat he ever faced as he was the 7-time defending champion at the tournament this year.

Having announced her retirement through a video interview, Barty is set to address a press conference as well where further details about her shocking decision can be expected on why she chose to walk away from the game when she was in the ‘purple-patch’. Barty had won 2 of the last 3 Grand Slams, 9 of her last 10 finals (2021 Madrid Open, the only defeat), 22 of the 23 matches against Top-30 players and had lost only 3 service games in the last 93 service games she played.
