Coco Gauff continues her run at the French Open 2021 as she reaches the 4th round of the tournament for the first and for the 3rd time in all Grand Slams.
Except for her home Grand Slam, the US Open, Gauff has reached the 4th round for the remaining 3 Grand Slams and looking at her current form, she may better it with a quarter-final appearance in sight for the young American.
Coco had her match cut short in the 3rd round when her opponent and fellow American, Jennifer Brady had to forcefully withdraw from the match due to injury after the conclusion of the first set which Gauff had won dropping just 1 game winning it 6-1 in 23 minutes.
Coco analyses her 1st week at the French Open 2021
Coco Gauff who now enters the 2nd week of Grand Slams for the 3rd time in her career analysed her 1st week as she reaches the 4th round with straight-set victories in her first two rounds and an unexpected end in the 3rd round match where she was 6-1 up in the match when Brady retired.
“I think with each match, it’s getting better and better. Even though today, Jenny (Jennifer Brady) wasn’t 100%, I do think that I played well for the first set and also in my 2nd round match, I thought I played well for the majority of the match. I feel like I’m getting better and better with each match and that’s kind of how I want it to happen,”
“This is I think my second or third time in the second week of a Slam, and I would say that my journey to it has probably been the most professional, I guess. No unnecessary 3-set matches and stuff like that. I think you can tell that I’m improving and making smarter decisions on the court.” said Coco about her game so far at the Roland Garros this year which is her best result in Paris so far.
Coco Gauff talks about the American challenge at the Roland Garros this year
18 American women were part of the main draw at the French Open 2021 of which now only 4 remain in the form of Sofia Kenin, Serena Williams, Coco Gauff and Sloane Stephens.
“I guess we are all doing well. I don’t keep a track of rankings so I don’t know, but I think there were three all-American match-ups in the third round which is pretty good. Obviously, we probably want to play each other later in the tournament, but it’s pretty good to show that American tennis is going strong,” said Coco about the American camaraderie at the tournament.
“I honestly think that we are all pushing each other even more because we’re all practicing with each other and playing practice matches and sets with each other. I think that we’re all competing with each other, but also supporting each other. I think, right now at least with all the American girls, we all have a pretty good energy on the tour and it shows in our results.” concluded Gauff.
