Alexander Zverev, the world number three, was enraged by several Brazilian supporters who insulted his mother and family during Saturday’s Davis Cup match against Thiago Monteiro, which Germany won 3-1.
On his return to the German squad, Alexander Zverev won the Davis Cup game against Brazil, but he was irritated in the post-match press conference after alleged abuse was directed at his family and girlfriend. In the press conference, he voiced his displeasure and disappointment. Zverev stated fans stepped over the line with his brother and girlfriend Sophia both in the stadium.
As per additional reports, Zverev had to call the umpire to the chair at one point during the game since they were yelling his girlfriend’s name in an offensive manner. People in the stadium also expressed their discontent with the German following the infamous Acapulco incident in which he was disqualified from the tournament after slamming his racquet against the umpire’s chair and cursing at him.
“When it gets towards your family members or somebody that you love, this is where I draw the line for respect. Today that line was crossed basically,” he said.
“In my match and in the doubles match, they were rude all the time serving. People came to watch tennis, cheer for Brazil, respect. These are very respected. I enjoyed playing in a loud and lively atmosphere, but some passed in the end, I’m not upset with anyone, I received Greetings to everyone from Brazil in the locker room,” he added.
Regarding the match, he said: “I played well today, at a high level against Thiago who was in good shape, but it was not easy for him to play at home, excited. I was nervous at that moment, but in the important moments I felt my forehand well, I was I serve and come back very well. I am happy with the way I played in general.”
