World No.2 Daniil Medvedev is not only one of the most hard-working players on the ATP tour, but he is also known to lose his cool. The Russian often finds himself in the middle of a light-controversy due to him temperamental behavior.
Once again, Medvedev made headlines for violently breaking his racquet, post his surprising quarterfinal exit to Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta at the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Games.
The incident took place at the Ariake Tennis Park inside the Tokyo Stadium, when the Russian expressed his disappointment for his exit by thrashing his racquet into pieces, before he shook hands at the net with his high-spirited opponent.
Medvedev had also complained about the oppressive conditions during the day in Tokyo, for which he even argued with the chair umpire several times. Medvedev raised his concern and was also heard saying to the chair umpire, “I can finish the match, but I can die. Who will be responsible if I die?”
While he credited World No.1 Novak Djokovic for his efforts in talking to the authorities about moving the tennis matches to late afternoon, Medvedev was still very upset about the scheduling.
“It was terrible. Novak is the man, thanks to him. I didn’t enjoy the conditions still, but it was much better than playing at 11,” the two-time Grand Slam finalist added.
Medvedev eyes North American hard court swing
Moving on, Medvedev who made the quarterfinals of Roland Garros and fourth round of Wimbledon, will turn his attention towards the upcoming North American hard court swing, where he is comfortable as compared to the clay and grass.
The Russian will be seen in action at the Rogers Cup in Montreal and later Cincinnati Masters, where he is a champion. Medvedev is also a former US Open runner-up in 2019 and will return to New York for the final Grand Slam of the year. Given his fancy on the hard courts, he is going to be one of the prime contenders to win the title.
