Daniil Medvedev is a bit like Rafael Nadal, reckons Monaco professional Jean-Rene Lisnard
Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev
World No.2 Daniil Medvedev stunned the tennis world by beating World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2021 US Open. Not only did the Russian win his maiden Grand Slam title, but he also stopped the Serbian star from achieving the Calendar Slam.
After two failed attempts at the US Open in 2019 and the Australian Open in 2021, Medvedev finally managed to cross the final hurdle. In the process, he also beat Djokovic for the first time in Grand Slams.
Recently, in a chat with welovetennis.fr, Monegasque professional Jean-Rene Lisnard opined that Medvedev has similar qualities to that of 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal.
“I immediately understood that he was a straightforward person with healthy values, someone who loved competition,” the Monaco Davis Cup player explained. “Daniil likes a challenge, he hates defeat, a bit like Rafael Nadal. When I learned that he was playing Novak Djokovic [in the final of the US Open 2021], I was rather confident because I know that he learns from his mistakes, that he always wants to succeed.”
Jean-Rene Lisnard who remains the only player from Monaco to play a match in the main draw of a Grand Slam also added that the newly crowned US Open champion also has incredible analytical skills, in comparison to his peers.
“He has a faculty to understand things very quickly and to put them in place immediately. Not all tennis players have this quality. If we add to this his pragmatism and his analytical skills, we quickly come to the conclusion that Daniil has intelligence far above average,” the 42-year-old said.
Daniil Medvedev returns to Indian Wells
After enjoying his time with his family, post the US Open win, Medvedev turned up in Boston to play the 2021 Laver Cup for Team Europe. Now, the 25-year-old will return to the ATP tour at the upcoming ATP Masters in Indian Wells.
Medvedev has never won the title in California before. However, he will be the top seed in Djokovic’s absence.
