‘$3 million in a month or not even 50,000’ Daniil Medvedev talks about expenses on Tour
Daniil Medvedev
World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev had one of his best seasons in 2021 as he went on to win his first Grand Slam title while also winning two tournaments with his nation. He also won the masters title in Toronto while also winning his first-ever career title on grass when he won the inaugural 2021 Mallorca Championships.
Medvedev finished the 2021 season as the second-highest earning male player on the Tour as he took home $7.48 million of which a massive cheque came from his win at the 2021 US Open where he won $2.5 million after his win in the finals against Novak Djokovic. He followed the win with two more runners-up finishes at the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals.
While he earned a massive amount this year, in a recent interview with the Youtube channel Tinkoff Investments, he explained how the earnings go up and down on the Tour. “To be completely honest, in a month you can make up to $ 3 million. When, for example, you win a Grand Slam tournament. And some months you don’t even make 50,000. And the expenses are fixed.
“A certain amount of money is spent to maintain the team. There is a trainer, a physical trainer, sometimes doctors and physiotherapists. All this is quite expensive because you have to pay for tickets and accommodation, for example. Apart from that, each has a fixed salary and a percentage based on performance. Theoretically, you can travel without a team or a coach, but then you won’t get any results,” added Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev is 18th on the list of all-time leader in career prize money
Despite having won just 1 Grand Slam title, Medvedev currently sits on 18th place in the all-time career prize money list having a total of $21,611,856 in prize money. Djokovic leads this year’s list with $9.1 million while also sits on the top of the all-time list with $154,756,726 won in career prize money having overtaken Roger Federer this year who is 2nd on the list with $130,594,339.
Having tasted the first blood of a Grand Slam title, Medvedev will surely hunt a few more in the coming seasons and might also rise in the prize money won list.
